Consistent Large‐Scale Response of Hourly Extreme Precipitation to Temperature Variation Over Land
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hourly precipitation extremes can intensify with temperature at higher rates than expected from thermodynamic increases explained by the Clausius-Clapeyron (CC) relationship (∼6.5%/K), but local scaling surface air is highly variable. Here we use daily dew point temperature, a direct proxy of absolute humidity, to estimate at-gauge across six macro-regions for global data set over 7,000 hourly gauges. We find CC 2 × more 60% gauges, peaking in tropics median rate ∼1.5CC. Moreover, regional show surprisingly universal behavior around CC, Europe. Importantly impacts, persistently extreme precipitation. Our results indicate greater consistency previous work, usually or above positive (sub)tropics. This demonstrates relevance DPT understanding future changes.

Estimating the Response of Extreme Precipitation over Mid-latitude
Global warming induced changes in extreme orographic precipitation are investigated using a hierarchy of models: a global climate model, a limitedarea weather forecast model, and a linear mountain-wave model. We consider precipitation changes over an idealized north-south mid-latitude mountain barrier at the western margin of an otherwise flat continent. The intensities of the extreme events on...
متن کاملNonlinear responses of land ecosystems to variation in precipitation.
As global change induces more and more extreme climate events (Field et al., 2012), temporal variability in precipitation is likely becoming larger than ever. How land ecosystems respond to the stronger temporal variability in precipitation is a new frontier research area for ecologists (Reichstein et al., 2013; Niu et al., 2014). In this issue of New Phytologist Knapp et al. (pp. 41–47) frame ...
